John Hubert Winkler, Jr. died at home on
Sunday, February 4, 2001 after a courageous battle against pancreatic
cancer. A native of North Caroline who served in the United States Air
Force and graduated from the University of North Caroline at Chapel
Hill, he was the son of John Hubert Winkler and Annie Finley Winkler of
North Wilkesboro, NC He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Conway
Lucas Winkler of Charlotte, NC; their children John Lucas Winkler of
Austin, TX, his wife, Anneth, their son, John Martin Winkler, and Maria
Winkler McGrath of Brooklyn, NY, her husband, Ian, their daughter,
Conway Garlington McGrath; his sisters Robin Naughton of La Grande, OR,
and Molly Good of Floweree, MT, and his brother James Winkler of
Philadelphia, PA.
After graduating Phi Beta Kappa with a BS degree in Geology, he
pursued a career in the oil industry that included U.S. assignments in
Alaska, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, Texas, Louisiana, and
Oklahoma, as well as overseas in Libya, England and France. After
retiring from Schlumberger in 1985, he established Winkler Insurance
Agency and earned credentials as a Certified Insurance Counselor as well
as several other professional designations. He was an active member of
St. Paul’s UMC in Houston for 20 years, and an Eagle Scout who served
as Scoutmaster for the troop at St. Paul’s. He also enjoyed golfing
with good friends.
A Memorial Service will be held at four o’clock on Friday, February
23, 2001 at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 5501 S. Main St.,
Houston, TX. The Reverend Dr. James Bankston will officiate, and the
family will receive friends at church after the service.
Rather than flowers, John would prefer to be remembered with a gift
to the Boy Scout Troop of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church.
