DVD cover. Would you want a sheriff who would use his office for personal gain?

A blind pig finds an acorn....Every once in a while, the Fort Bend County sheriff’s department gets an asset forfeiture whereby someone breaking the law has their property confiscated by law enforcement. It’s usually drug money, or cars or homes owned by some drug dealer. The money is split up among various agencies and can only be spent by a law enforcement agency.

Recently, the Fort Bend Sheriff’s department came into a $25,000 asset forfeiture. Usually, Fort Bend Sheriff’s officials spend the money foolishly anyway like buying some department head a souped up vehicle and claiming they are using it for “training” purposes or they buy some other skating-on -the-edge-of-legality item. I don’t know if they have ever spent the money wisely, like buying bullet proof vests or a patrol car. No, they act like the money is “found” money to be used like they want.

But the recent $25,000 purchase takes the cake. The department ordered 500 copies at $5 per copy of a DVD that tells you how to protect your children from internet predators. A commendable purchase by the sheriff’s department except that the front and back cover of the county-paid-for DVD features a large picture of Chief Deputy Craig Brady on the front and a smaller picture of hIM and his wife on the back.

Yes, this is the much-younger wife who was working under his command as a jailer, whom he got pregnant and divorced his other wife, mother of four of his children to whom he had been married for 28 years.

Although the cover does not say “Vote for me for Sheriff,” it might as well as he is shown with all the badges associated with his office and with his arms crossed over his hiked up leg and showing his monogrammed boots. There is no political disclaimer, and why should there be because the DVD was paid with county funds, not political funds.

A more appropriate image on the cover should be of children using a computer or something like that, not Craig Brady in all his 5’6” law enforcement glory.

According to my information, the DVDs were passed out by Pct. 3 Andy Meyers’ employees at a joint meeting of commissioners and the Sheriff’s department with all the MUD boards and HOA boards. The meeting was to try to get the boards to pay extra money to the sheriff’s department.

In a department that is crying out for funds and trying to force the HOAs and MUDs into paying for extra protection to the sheriff’s department, the money spent on those DVDs could have been put to a much better use than as a campaign piece for Brady for Sheriff. It is totally inappropriate.

Yes, I’m going to complain to the Texas Ethics commission but after it spends two years being bounced around that agency, the agency will probably fine him a little and forget about it.

But I want you, dear reader, to remember it when you vote in a couple of years about how he used that money for his personal political use. How would he use the office of sheriff?
