WHATEVER WORKS

After the failure of his career, his marriage, and his suicide attempt, world-class grouch Boris Yellnikoff, spends his days insulting the small children unfortunate enough to study chess with him and irritating his still-loyal friends with his never-ending tirades about the worthlessness of absolutely everything. A former Columbia Professor and self-proclaimed genius who came close to winning a Nobel Prize for Quantum Mechanics, Boris fancies himself the only one who fully comprehends the meaningless of all human aspirations, and the pitch-black chaos of the universe. As he readily admits, Boris is not a “feel-good person.”

The basic story thread centers around Melodie and Boris’ marriage that is complicated when Melodie’s parents find out about the wedding. The in laws quickly get themselves to New York in an effort to talk their daughter out of this arrangement. What Melodie’s parents discover is that the life of a New Yorker is a far different animal than those of the white anglo saxon Protestants they used to be.

Don’t get me wrong - I thoroughly enjoyed the film, however the ending seemed like something out of the old Brady Bunch episodes. All of the character plot lines come together in a perfect union at the end, with lessons being learned by all. Overall, this picture is very funny and worth the price of admission.

WATCHMEN: Blu-ray - Warner

Watchmen is set in the mid-1980s, a time of increased nuclear tension between the United States and the Soviet Union, as Richard Nixon is enjoying his fifth term as president and the world’s superheroes have been forcibly retired. Things begin with a bang: the mysterious high-rise murder of the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), a masked hero with a checkered past, puts the rest of the retired superhero community on alert. The credits sequence, a series of tableaux that wittily catches us up on crime-fighting back story, actually turns out to be the high point of the movie. Thereafter we meet the other caped and hooded avengers: the furious Rorschach (Jackie Earle Haley), the inexplicably naked Dr. Manhattan (Billy Crudup), Silk Spectre II (Malin Akerman), Nite Owl II (Patrick Wilson), and Ozymandias (Matthew Goode). The corkscrewing storytelling, which worked well in the comic book, gives the movie the strange sense of never quite getting in gear, even as some of the episodes are arresting.

12 MONKEYS: Blu-ray - Universal

Cole (Bruce Willis) is sent back in time to save the human race from a deadly virus that has forced mankind into dank underground communities in the future. Along his travels, he encounters a psychiatrist (Madeleine Stowe) and a mental patient, brilliantly portrayed by Brad Pitt, who may hold the key to the mysterious rogue group, the Army of the 12 Monkeys, thought to be responsible for unleashing the killer disease. Believing he can obtain a pure virus sample in order to find a cure in the future, he is met with one riddle after another that puts him in a race with time. This sci-fi masterpiece from the genius mind of Terry Gilliam is a modern-day classic.

DAFFY DUCK’S QUACKBUSTERS - Warner

Daffy and his pals Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Sylvester and Tweety set up the “Ghouls R Us” ghost busting agency to rid the world of spooks. Also includes 1987 short “The Duxorcist” and 1988 short “Night of the Living Duck.” Die hard Looney Tunes fans are sure to love this DVD treat. PUSHING DAISIES: Season Two Blu-Ray - Warner

Despite its candy colors and sweet romance, this inventive dramedy never veers into saccharine territory. Lee Pace stars as Ned, a piemaker with a very special gift: he can bring dead things--from his dog to rotting fruit to people--back to life with a simple touch. But the second he touches them again, they return to their previous state. If he doesn’t, something else meets a dire fate. He uses his ability to solve murders and collect the reward with his business partner, a private detective named Emerson Cod (Chi McBride). But when he begins to look into the death of his childhood friend and lost love, Charlotte “Chuck” Charles (Anna Friel), Ned can’t allow her to remain among the dearly departed.

THE ALZHEIMER’S PROJECT - HBO

Alzheimer’s is the second-most-feared illness in America following cancer, and it is the nation’s sixth leading cause of death. Is such anxiety justified? The answer, until recently, was not comforting. The Alzheimer’s Project consists of 4 films. The anchor of The Alzheimer’s Project series is Momentum in Science which features 25 leading scientists, a prime time state-of-the-science report revealing the most cutting-edge research advances. The three additional prime time specials (The Memory Lost Tapes; Grandpa, Will You Remember Me? With Maria Shriver; and Caregivers) capture what it means to experience the disease, to be a child or grandchild of one who suffers, and to care for those who are affected. Alzheimer’s is an irreversible and progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking skills. Since advancing age is the strongest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, as the baby boom generation reaches retirement in 2011, the number of those affected will soar. Hard scientific inquiry is demonstrating that there are a number of ways that we can improve our chances of remaining cognitively vital throughout a long life. These findings are presented in this special.

G.I. JOE: Season 1.1 - Shout

G.I. Joe is the code name for Americas highly-trained special missions force. Its purpose: to defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world! In 1983 Hasbro made a bold statement when it relaunched its classic toy line of military action heroes as an adventure-based team of unique characters, each with his, and her, own specialties. And because it captured the imaginations and hearts of boys and girls aspiring to make a difference in the world, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero was an immediate success lasting over 25 incredible years. Fans of the G.I. Joe series are sure to love this set and just before the release of the feature film.
