Time For Family

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Memorial Day with their families, and took some time out of their days to think about the veterans and soldiers that sacrifice for our freedoms. Appreciation for such great heroes is not difficult, because we all have something inside of us that makes us proud of where we come from and how our country was formed. Texas is known for its patriotic people, who love to talk about where they are from and defend their state, and that pride really shows through in everything that we do.

This past weekend I attended a beautiful Texas wedding that taught me even more about Southern hospitality.

Weddings are a new beginning and a continuation of a great love shared between two people, so of course it is no surprise that I was emotional about the event even before it happened. The two families were so overjoyed by the occasion and so gracious and glad that I was there and that made for a really great time. I am so happy for the couple and hope they have a beautiful new life together.

From this event I really learned something about meeting large groups of people and keeping track of names. The next time I go to a gathering that involves being introduced to so many people I will be prepared with a pad and pen, because I started losing track within the first five minutes of introductions. It is always great to have a good introducing statement, to help everyone remember you, and mine was ďthis is Stephanie, sheís Irish,Ē which I got a great laugh out of, because itís one small thing that always helps me stand out.

One thing that Texas and Ireland have in common is the peopleís love for great steak and chicken, and there is nothing I love more than some well marinated, barbequed meat and some mashed potatoes. Everywhere I go I like to bring these similarities to light, because it reminds me that even though Houston is a melting pot of people from all around the world, we all share some common foods and love for our home countries. My week has been filled with meeting new people and enjoying new experiences, and it is always good to have a day when everyone can relax and enjoy each others company.

Regardless of the relaxation there is still a hustle and bustle to get last minute grades in and make that transcript look as good as possible. So I know Iím going to get right back on that horse and get into gear for the last two weeks of school. Hopefully everyone has a good review week, or enjoys winding down and preparing for the summer.

Memorial Day is about pride and appreciation, and I am so glad to see that appreciation everywhere I look. New beginnings are a great thing, whether it is witnessing a wedding or planning new things over the summer to do with your family. Taking it all in stride is what itís all about, so lets all show everyone our Texas pride this week and in the upcoming months and continue the tradition of great Southern hospitality that can be felt around the world.
