It was fun.....The Fort Bend “C” club has its President’s Day Gala this past Friday at the Safari, and it was a resounding success. Over 500 guests heard Tony Snow, a
former White House press secretary and television personality on Fox News, speak about various topics including his years at the White House and his vision of the future.
The event was attended by most of the county’s elected officials and for its first President’s Day gala, the attendance was eye-opening.
The “C” club was started after the local Republican party was taken over completely by the social conservatives who shut out the newly elected county chairman and any others who did not pass their litmus test.
In a short time, the club has enjoyed great success. It has not tried to dismantle the local Republican party, but offer an alternative to supporting candidates who are fiscally conservative, but not necessarily socially conservative. Members of the “C” club believe in supporting
candidates who will work to benefit the Fort Bend community.
I had a wonderful time, visiting with a lot of old friends. Even former county chairman Eric Thode and his lovely wife was there.
Joyce Senior, who was manning the door to the private room with a pre-dinner meet and greet with Tony Snow, asked me to take her place for a short time.
I loved being the gate keeper. I asked those wanting admittance, “Are you Dick Cheney?” When they answered in the affirmative, and they all did, I let them in.
Pat Baig and I shared a table. Vi and Wayne Chandler, Michael and Lisa Fredrickson, and Jessica Kij (Jim was at the rodeo) were also there. I love sharing a table with old friends because then I don’t have to worry about saying the wrong thing or using the wrong fork.
My only problem for the night was my thigh high stockings kept falling down. I don’t know why. I certainly don’t have smaller thighs. I just kicked them under the table. I wonder what Allison Wen thought when someone found them under the table!
There were six items in the live auction and they yielded about $17,000.
The night was relaxed and fun. There was no jockeying for position about who got to introduce what speaker and who got to lead what pledge. Those that worked so hard putting the gala together got to do whatever they wanted. The rest of us didn’t care. We were just there to enjoy
the evening.
Another political fun event.....It’s County Clerk Dianne Wilson’s Birthday Bash and will not only celebrate Dianne’s (mumble) birthday, but her 25 years as county clerk.
She is being roasted by Sheriff Milton Wright, Star owner (me) Bev Carter, Sugar Land Mayor Dave Wallace and legal eagle Lynne Humphries. Marvin Marcell will emcee.
It is scheduled for the lodge at the Safari on Thursday, March 27 at 6:30 p.m. Tables are $500-$1,000 depending on how many beverage tickets you want. Or individual tickets are $30 each. We hope it is a night that is burned in Dianne’s memory! Call Gary or Janice Gillen at
281-342-6969 to reserve a table or ticket.
I’m sure it will be fun. One year Herb Appel dressed up like me and gave a outstanding performance in a flowered dress. The next year I rode a motorcycle into the main room at the Fort Bend County Club, pretending to be Herb’s ex-wife, Candy Appel. I think you can still smell the
exhaust there.
So I’m sure it will be fun, although I think we’ve all gotten a little older and can’t quite kick as much sand as we used to.
If you are wondering why this column is so nice, it is because I’m going to the hospital for a procedure and if this is the last column I write, I want it to be nice.
By next week, I’ll be ranting again.
