Bev's Burner
Some's Hot, Some's Not

By B.K. Carter

"Bev Carter is the owner/publisher of the Fort Bend Star, winner of numerous state and national awards. She has been a voice of Fort Bend's largest circulated newspaper for 30 years."

Locked and loaded.....While I was out of town this weekend, someone kicked over my sign in my yard supporting Billy Frank Teague. They left the other political sign alone even though it was closer to the street. I guess it was meant as a warning or a threat or something.

Well, know this. I am not intimidated that you know where I live. I have a loaded .38 in my house for protection. Don’t be stepping into my yard to do harm to my political signs, I may drag you into the house and claim you broke in. The very idea, you little wienie, trying to scare a old women. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Dire prediction.....Early voting started yesterday and if we are to believe the stories going around, election day is going to be long lines and waiting. So you best go ahead and vote now.

You know how I stand on two races. I’ve been covering Fort Bend politics for almost thirty years now and there are many good elected officials in place that I have supported and helped them get their office. Since I run a business in Fort Bend and this is the only location of my business, you can bet I am really interested in who runs various offices in the county and what their vision is.

Look around you. This is a pretty nice community and many of those people that I have recommended to you in the past have something to do with this being a very nice community. My motive for recommending people who are running and asking you to put them in office is simply because I want this community to continue to be as energetic and forward-thinking as it can be.

Sometimes in the past I have recommended people for you to vote on that I thought were good candidates at the time. And they were good candidates at the time. However, after many years in office, they may have changed and shown me and others that they are no longer the best person for the job.

That is the case with two of the races I have been most concerned with this election cycle--the sheriff’s race and the state representative race for District 26.

Barney Fife and others too.....In the sheriff’s race, our current sheriff has forgot why he was originally elected. He now spends most of his time playing golf or the accordion, and the rest of his time plotting to one up other law enforcement agencies.

His office is now characterized by palace intrigue and a lack of cooperation with other agencies. This is something that has started over the past four years and it is influencing law enforcement all over the county.

We might not notice it much now on the outside, but it is fast becoming a real problem. If you don’t quite believe me and think I’m Chicken Little, I suggest you ask a cop. I’m sure you have a friend, relative, neighbor that is a cop or knows a cop. Ask them and unless they are the 10 or so fair-haired boys in the sheriff’s department, they will tell you the truth if they are sure it won’t get back to the current sheriff who has a lie detector department that is used solely to root out employees who are not “loyal” to the sheriff.

The “Ask a Cop” suggestion is one I made many years ago with another police regime and it resulted in the then-current sheriff losing his job.

So vote for Billy Frank Teague. He has years of law enforcement experience and some good ideas about running the department now and holding the line on expenses.

Scooby Doo and Craddick too....Many years ago I asked you to vote for Charlie Howard for State Representative. The current representative then wasn’t doing his job and had been named one of the “Ten Worst” by Texas Monthly.

I thought Charlie would do a better job and I thought he promised to leave after a few years. Wrong!!!!! On so many levels.

I guess Fort Bend probably holds the record on the number of times our legislators have been named “Ten Worst” by Texas Monthly because Charlie Howard has had three “Ten Worst” all by himself. Now Charlie has aligned himself with that rascal House Speaker Tom Craddick and not only doesn’t do anything, but doesn’t do anything except what Craddick tells him too.

Recently, Charlie told someone I know that I hate him because he is religious. That is not true. I don’t hate Charlie. I want my representatives to have some moral compass. I just don’t want religion to be their only agenda. Charlie spent all last session working on getting a religious law passed for the schools that wasn’t even necessary. And before that, he spent the entire session trying to pass a law for Texas to recognize his daughter’s correspondent law school.

You can’t convince me that Charlie won’t run for Kyle Janek’s senatorial seat the minute he can, leaving us with having to have another million dollar election.

Not only has Charlie aligned himself with Craddick and the ultra religious right, he hasn’t even left when he promised us he would!

Fort Bend County is a vibrant, growing county. We deserve the best. And I believe the best is Paula Stansell. We won’t have to be ashamed that she is our representative. Please vote for her in the Republican primary.

I know many of you are concerned about the Democratic presidential primary, but both Billy Frank Teague and Paula Stansell are only running in the Republican primary. They have no Democratic opponents. If we want to get rid of the rascals we have there now, we can only vote for them in the Republican primary.
