ERNEST HEMINGWAY: Rivers to the Sea - PBS

Ernest Hemingway was a great American writer. Ernest Hemingway was a real man. Why do I state this. Because that is what I was told as I watched the 90 minute PBS documentary on the authors life. I also know that writer/director Dewitt Sage can’t tell a story. Why? Because after watching the film I didn’t know anything new about the author. Well, I did learn that he was married four time, not twice. I did learn that. The problem is that Sage tells the film in non-linier fashion, so it’s hard to keep track to what where you are and what is going on. Also, the film is filled with quotes from Hemingway’s works as well a from letter and publication he wrote. This was quite confusing as I was unsure as to when these were from life or fiction. In the end I didn’t care. Special features include additional interviews that were cut from the film. Guess what? They all let you know that Ernest was a great writer. That and he didn’t like F. Scott Fitzgerald. If you are a fan of Ernest Hemingway then you will probably enjoy this PBS film.

ODYSSEY 5 - Sony

The astronaut crew of a space shuttle looks on in horror as they witness the violent destruction of the Earth. However, they are given a chance to change humanity’s fate when a sympathetic alien sends them five years into the past. Their mission--find out who’s responsible for the plot to destroy the planet. Can they deal with their own pasts while saving the world from the mysterious organism known only as “Leviathan?” I really enjoyed watching the program. The story is “far-out” making for a great entertaining sci-fi. The cast is led by Peter Weller (Robocop) with supporting roles from Sebastian Roche, Christopher Gorham, Leslie Silva and Tamara Craig Thomas. The effects are typical for TV. I thought the various shots of the Shuttle were well-done and the destruction of the Earth was rather frightening. The stories form one plotline taking you five years before the disaster for the crew to making things right. The only downside to this show is that it doesn’t finish. As with many other sci-fi shows, this one got canceled just as it was getting interesting. You get enough good stories to warrant the purchase of the set, but it would have been nice to see the conclusion of the plot. The DVD is presented in Widescreen Format and remastered in High Definition. All 19 episodes are here on 5 discs. Extras include commentary from Weller and Coto on the pilot episode.
