DETECTIVE STORY -
Paramount
Detective Story is another brilliant work
from director William Wyler ( who directed my all time
favorite, The Best years of Our Lives). Taking place in
1951, Kirk Douglas stars as detective Jim McLeod in the 21st
precinct in New York City. Jim is the type who wants to
clean the entire city of all crime and corruption. He tries,
but it is impossible. He relentlessly pursues an abortionist
(a strong topic for 1951) and copes with his own personal
problems along the way. This film is sort of like an early
version of Law and Order as you really see the inner
workings of a police station while crimes are being
investigated. The transfer looks good with little edge
enhancement and the mono soundtrack sounds dated, but is
adequate. There are no extras on this disc. Overall, is a
crime classic that should be part of your collection.
THE RUSSIAN
SPECIALIST - Sony
Nick Cherenko,a former Special Forces
soldier, smuggles his family from Russia to the United
States only to have his Wife and son killed by the Mafia.
Accepting a job in Russia to retrieve a kidnapped daughter,
Cherenko find’s out that this is the same family that killed
his. We have all seen this plot before in so many other
films. The overall script is mediocre leaving the cast to
fend for themselves in terms of delivery. Lundgren stars and
directs the film, making sure that there is plenty of action
from start to finish for his character. Other than Rocky IV,
this is the only part that I see him playing. The supporting
cast includes Ben Cross, Hilda Van Der Meulen and the lovely
Olivia Lee. This film is full of gun battles, explosions and
chases that will keep you entertained for the duration of
the film. If you are looking for character development or
intense story, you won’t find it here. This is just mindless
action on-screen with little thought involved.
KNIGHT RIDER:
Season Three - Universal
Michael Long is a crime fighter who is
seriously wounded during his work. Nursed back to health by
a mysterious benefactor (chairman of the Knight Industries),
he regains consciousness a new man with a new face and a new
name: Michael Knight. His mysterious benefactor (through the
guise of associate Devon Miles) provides Michael with
equipment and support so that he can continue his crime
fighting work. The most notable piece of equipment supplied,
is “KITT”, a high-performance sports car fitted with
artificial intelligence.
Gear up for plenty of non-stop action
with season three of Knight Rider. Hasselhoff speeds from
one adventure into another in K.I.T.T., the car with an
artificial intelligence. Like many of these shows from the
80s, there was one basic story told over and over again with
different guest stars and an occasional plot twist to keep
you entertained. Most of us watched the show for the car.
Hasselhoff does a fine job playing Michael Knight and
provides plenty of on-screen “eye candy” for the ladies.
This season provides many unforgettable adventures including
toxic waste, missile-guidance systems, high-tech street
racers and K.I.T.T.’s evil twin K.A.R.R. Season three comes
with all 21 episodes presented in Full Screen format and
Dolby sound. There is also a bonus episode from the fourth
season entitled “Knight of the Rising Sun”.
