Game of the week
Okay high school football fans, it's getting fun now. When the district champ gets knocked off by a middle of the pack type team, you know it's playoff time. Travis took on Elkins this weekend in a good ole' fashioned FBISD offensive shootout.
Travis scored often and scored early as Connor Smith took the ball in for a 1 yard run on the Tigers first possession. With 8:30 left in the 1st quarter, Travis was up 7 - 0. Elkins start kicker Nick Coffman would hit a big 33 yard field goal for the Knights to make the score 7-3 with 2:22 left in the 1st quarter.
Then came an offensive shootout of epic proportion. With 11:51 left in the 2nd quarter, emerging QB Kyle " Big gun " Coulter unloaded a 60 yard atomic bomb to wide receiver Chris " Ricky" Bobb who hauled it in for an ESPN moment. Not to be outdone, Coach Crivellari and his staff pulled the "one up" and called a big play of his own. On the very next possession, QB and senior Jake Burkhalter sent a sky bomb with 10:30 in the 2nd quarter and hit Chance Allen for a 62 yard touchdown. Nick Coffman would convert the extra point and the score was 14-10 in favor of the Tigers.
Travis then answered with the climax of the epic when with another fantastic pass play. This time it would be Allen West claiming his stake as he hit wide receiver and leader Kelton Rhine for a 61 yard touchdown with 9:33 left in the 2nd. Travis 21 Elkins 10. Rhine has been extremely steady for the Tigers this season. He has a bright future ahead of him in football.
On the next possession, Burkhalter collected the troops and put together another nice drive and capped it off with an 8 yard scamper of his own. Burkhalter has run the ball as well as he has passed it this year. He has D-1 written all over his jersey folks. Travis 21 Elkins 17.
Travis would not go to the locker room without scoring again however. The "big gun" would strike again when QB Kyle Coulter found receiver Blake Kidd in the end zone for a 15 yard touchdown pass with 30 seconds remaining in the half. Bernards point after was good and the Travis Tigers took a 28-17 lead into the locker room.
Elkins came out gunning in the 2nd half picking up right where they left off. Burkhalter threw a 10 yard touchdown strike to Chance Allen with 7:36 left in the 3rd period for their second hook up of the evening. Travis 28 - Elkins 25 after Nick Coffman's point after.
Then, with 8:48 left in the 4th, QB Kyle Coulter struck again on a 33 yard touchdown strike to receiver Cody Moncure, 35 - 25 Travis up by 10. It didn't stop there ladies and gentlemen. Elkins would score again to make it a game when Burkhalter again struck gold with another touchdown pass to guess who? That's right, Chance Allen.
But in the end, it would be Kelton Rhine giving Travis the win and Elkins the dagger to "ice ice baby" the game with 1:59 left.
Best of luck to all four Ft Bend playoff teams. Elkins, Hightower, Travis, and Kempner, who won a big game against Dulles this weekend.
Until next week, good golf, good tennis, or whatever makes you happy.
