Austin players and cheerleaders
celebrate the win over Clements
This weekend had a vast spectrum of wins and losses throughout Fort Bend ISD. None bigger however, than the Austin Bulldog 36 - 31 win over the Clements Rangers. Before the win, Austin had not notched a victory since the 2008 season. Bulldog fans were ecstatic Saturday night and the players diced Coach Dan Schreiber with a "Gatorade shower!" We all knew this was coming, we just didn't know when. Congrats to the mighty Bulldogs. Hopefully they can take this win and win the rest of the season to take some momentum into the 2011 campaign. Who's house? DAWGS house!
Elkins and Marshall squared off in our game of the week. It was a perfect night for fall football. The Buffs from Missouri City weren't going to go down easily, and Elkins senior QB Jake Burkhalter knew it. Coach Crivellari and his staff did a nice job in preparation for a very tough Marshall team. The Knights went out and got the touchdown party started when senior leader and running back Dorian Wiliams raced in from 29 yards out for the first Elkins score. With 7:32 left in the 1st, kicker Jake Coffman hit the point after, and the Knights had a 7 - 0 lead.
Demarcus Sherman wouldn't stop there, with 8:23 left in the 2nd quarter he scampered in from 5 yards after an impressive defensive stand. Sherman has been one of the most consistent running backs in the district this season along with Jarrell Oliver from Dulles.
Speaking of Mr Consistency, Jake Burkhalter had another nice game as he tossed the pig skin for 139 yards. He also threw for an impressive 64% completion rating. Matt Schaub needs to come watch this kid play and take some notes. Elkins also punted extremely well averaging 49 yards per punt! That's almost unheard of in high school football. Demarcus Sherman closed the 1st half Elkins scoring party with a 6 yard run with 9 seconds left in the half. Sherman has also been fantastic all year and we should see him playing college ball next season. Credit the Elkins offensive line for this weekend's win. They controlled this game.
Elkins 21 Marshall 7 at the half.
Not to be outdone by the Elkins scoring barrage of the first half, Marshall receiver Tyler White would put on a little show of his own in the 2nd half. With 1:55 remaining in the 3rd quarter, White caught a 26 yard touchdown pass from De Washington to cut the Elkins lead to 14.
Both defenses then buckled down and for almost the entire 4th quarter there was no score. Marshall would cut the lead to 7 with 2:48 left in the 4th. Tyler White struck again, this time on a 6 yard strike from Allan Osemwegie. Fortunately for the Knights, it was too little too late for the Buffalos. Elkins ran the clock out and came away with a 21-14 victory and held on to their undefeated district 23 5a record. They out gained the Buffalos 350 yards to 241.
Elkins is 6-2 overall and 3-0 in district. They stand alone at the top of FBISD in first place.
Below are the district standings as of this week. The top 4 teams overall go to the playoffs. These last couple games will be very influential on who goes and does not go to the playoffs.
Elkins 6-2/ 3-0
Hightower 7-2/ 3-1
Kempner 4-4/ 2-1
Marshall 1-7/ 0-3
Travis 4-4/ 2-1
Till next week, here's wishing you good golf, good tennis, or whatever makes you happy.
