Game of the week:
Austin Bulldogs vs Manvel Mavericks
Friday night lights at Mercer stadium was nothing to brag about this week as the Austin Bulldogs took on 4A Manvel Mavericks. The Austin Bulldogs were plagued all night by penalties, dropped passes, poor communication between the QB Taylor Woods and his receivers, questionable play calling on the Austin offensive side, and a very good Manvel defense. Plus, Manvel seemed to score at will in the first half, with not one but two 65 yard touchdown plays that seemed to kill the spirit of the Austin team. Woods however, showed a strong arm, good speed and poise.
Austin kicker Villalon kicked off at 7:05 p.m. and Manvel started at the Bulldog 49. Sr Cromedy made a nice tackle on the 1st play of the game. Blake McCardle then sacked the Manvel QB to force a punt, but a personal fould against the Dogs gave them poor field position. Woods overthrew a wide open Deloach and that set the tone for a very frustrating first posession. Preston Rambo then dropped a pass on 2nd down. Woods then ran the ball himself for no gain forcing Austin to punt.
On the ensuing play, Manvel QB Dexter Foreman found a wide open receiver in the mkiddle of the field for a quick 65 yard score. The point after by Josh Martinez was good, and Manvel led 7-0.
On the next Austin drive, Woods completed his first pass to Sullivan but it was 2 yards short of a first down. Austi punted again. On the next Manvel drive, Hayward, Gutierrez, and Jalen Williams made nice tackles to make the Mavs punt. With 4:18 left in the 1st quarter, the Dogs started at their own 1 yard line. Shortly thereafter, Woods was intercepted and Manvel took over at the Dogs 35 yard line. Blake McCardle again came up big and recovered a fumble. Austin at their own 48. On first down, Woods again found Sullivan for a 9 yard gain, but threw his 2nd interception of the night on the next play. Manvel LB Drian Dubose took it in for a Manvel touchdown. Manvel 14 Austin 0 at the end of the first quarter. Austin went 4 and out. Manvel Senior QB Dexter Foreman again found a receiver, Gonzalez, for another 65 yard touchdown strike. Martinez was again good on the PAT. Manvel 21 Austin 0.
Austin then put together a nice long drive with Dejesus doing nice ground work and scored with Woods on a QB sneak. Villalons PAT was perfect. Manvel still up 21-7.
The biggest play of the 3rd quarter was Taylor Woods again being intercepted for the 3rd time in the game and Manvel took it to the house. PAT missed Manvel up 27-7 and that was the final score. He and his receivers just couldn't get together all night.
Blake McCardle also stripped a Manvel running back with 2:51 remaining in the 3rd. But again, the Bulldogs shot themselves in the foot with penalties. The Austin offense continued to sputter in the 4th quarter. A bright spot in the 4th quarter occured when senior captain Tyler Morvant made a circus grab to intercept Manvel QB Dexter Foreman. He really earned his "Pete Burger" on this one. It looked like Morvant was interviewing for a job with Ringling Brothers! There was also a fumbled punt recovered by Bulldog James Sullivan.
Austin is going to need to play together as an 11 player unit on offense and defense. So far, it looks like the Austin of old.
In other local action, Clements won against Pasadena Memorial. Elkins lost to Lamar on the final play in a thriller. Dulles again won on the final play with Zach Lathrop going in for a 2 point conversion with time expiring. Kempner was drilled. FBBA won big over Kipp academy.
Good luck next week to all local teams!!
