The mighty Dulles Vikings prevailed in their outstanding come-back over Hasting High School last Thursday night by the score of 24-23. The Vikings celebrate a victory together.
Our game of the week is Dulles vs Hastings played last Thursday, 7 p.m. on a beautiful evening at Mercer Stadium in Sugar Land. Although a non exciting first 3 quarters, the 4th quarter made up for it, and Dulles place kicker Travis Galloway became a high school football hero. The stands were packed as everyone awaited kickoff. Dulles received and started on their own 22 yard line. Senior QB # 14 Zach Lathrop threw an incomplete pass on the first play. The second play was a bad snap that went through the end zone for a safety. Hastings 2, Dulles 0, 11:45 remaining 1st quarter.
On Hastings next possession, QB Ricardo Wilson found # 20 Leflore for another Hastings score with 3:80 left in the 1st quarter. Dulles senior LB Charlie Ribbe and junior Zach Carrabine had a couple impressive tackles during the Hastings drive.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Vikings fumbled the football and Hastings recovered on the Vikings 40 yard line. With 9:56 left in the 2nd quarter, Wilson again found his favorite receiver for a touchdown. Hastings went for 2 but failed and the score was a shocking 16-0 in favor of Hastings.
Vikings fans were very, very quiet. It would turn out to be the calm before the storm. Dulles seemed to grow inspired when the Bears scored another touchdown. With Dulles down 23-0, Jarrel Oliver scampered in to from the 1 yard line pay dirt for the Vikings first score. Dulles then converted a 2 point conversion when Lathrop found # 20 Zoey Williams in the corner of the end zone. Hastings 23, Vikings 8, at halftime.
The 3rd quarter started nicely for the mighty Vikings. A couple very nice defensive plays by Senior LB # 11 Darius Hubbard and Junior CB Steven Smith gave the "Dulles Nation" the fuel they needed to take over, and take over they did.
Zach Lathrop went pass crazy, hitting every receiver in site. Jarrell Oliver scored again from 20 yards out to make the score 23-14 with 11:30 left in the 4th quarter. Dulles stopped Hastings and got the ball back. Lathrop then found # 24 Adrian Mcdaniels on a deep flag pattern from the spread formation for a 25 yard gain. Lathrop was just getting warm.
The senior QB then hit Senior receiver London Muse for a 29 yard gain. A few moments later, with 4:06 remaining in the contest Lathrop found two way specialist Zach Carrabine in the end zone on a 14 yard touchdown throw. The Vikings were back! Hastings 23, Vikings 21, with 4 minutes left.
The Vikings defense stepped up big and stopped Hastings in 4 plays. Hastings punted. Did the Vikings have anything left? Hastings still in the lead felt pretty confident about their chances at winning the game. However lurking on the Dulles sideline, pacing like a cat ready to pounce on his prey, was senior place kicker Travis Galloway. On 2nd down, Lathrop again hit Zoey Williams for a 39 yard gain. On the next play, senior Farrel Nnadozie made a circus grab to put the Vikings within Galloway's range.
With 18 seconds left in the game, Galloway stroked a 19 yard field goal right down the middle of the uprights to give the Vikings a 24-23 lead and an ultimate victory.
I asked Galloway what he was thinking about before he kicked the ball. He said, " I was praying." Well sports fans, looks like prayers do get answered in FBISD football. Note: Senior UT verbal commit Sheroid Evans did not play in this game due to a pulled hamstring. He will be back for district play. Evans is a speed demon who is good for at least 2 or 3 scores a game.
The Vkings are back folks, and will be very tough to beat. They have speed, defense, and a passing attack. They also do not quit. Next week's game of the week, Austin vs Manvel Friday night, 7pm, at Mercer stadium.
