Little boys and their toys....Courthouse watchers have been rather amused about the fuss between Fort Bend Sheriff Milton Wright and the Commissioners Court. Sheriff Wright (a misnomer) requested a boatload of Dodge Chargers this year. Commissioners Court wanted to give him Chevy Tahoes because they were cheaper, or some such esoteric reason.
This disagreement comes right during the time that commissioners are having meetings all over the county with homeowner’s associations and municipal utility districts asking that the entities step up their security patrols and hire the sheriff’s department. The HOA’s and MUD’s are being told that the sheriff’s department can no longer provide adequate security patrol at the present level of tax funding and that the private entities (supported themselves by property taxes) should hire the sheriff’s department to do extra duty to keep them safe.
As one board member (a woman, naturally) commented during a recent meeting, “Just what are our taxes already paying for anyway?”
I wish I was not fighting cancer and I could have been there to tell that woman that her taxes were paying for the sheriff’s department to hire all their buddies and give them take home cars if they toed the line. I could have told her that her taxes were paying for a sheriff’s department run by an elected official that simply by putting “Republican” by his name has been able to get re-elected time after budget-exploding time. He’s a man who heretofore was a “lone” Texas ranger who parlayed that into his current job.
In a word, he has no idea how to manage a large department or tax money and I don’t think he has surrounded himself with anyone else who has, most particularly his chief deputy who is trying to become sheriff without any aptitude for it either.
So we have the commissioners and the sheriff fighting over what kind of cars to buy when they should be fighting over BUYING CARS AT ALL.
Time was when we had a sheriff who cared about the taxpayers’ money, and why that sheriff gave take home cars to people. But for the most part, those take-home cars were old patrol cars which still had a little serviceable life left in them. If a head jailer and division chief got stuck in an old patrol car which gave up the ghost, they simply called a tow truck.
I’ve said many times before and it bears repeating here. About the only decisions some of our leaders feel comfortable making is the four wheels they put under their butts.
It’s official......State Representative Charlie Howard is the most conservative representative in the Texas House. This is according to Rice University’s James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy which released a study which plotted each representative’s voting record.
Howard, who has made Texas Monthly’s annual ranking of the Top Ten Worst Legislators three times--1997, 1999, and most recently in 2007--is proud of his record. According to published reports, Charlie reminded readers that Texas was one of the most conservative states in the union and that Fort Bend is one of the most conservative counties in the state, so he felt he was doing an extremely good job of representing his district and county.
What Charlie doesn’t tell readers (but I will) is that when he ran, he promised to only serve for two terms. After two terms, he amended that to three terms then after that, he gave up all pretense of being able to keep a promise.
On the educational front...Has Fort Bend ISD laid off any teachers yet? Has Fort Bend ISD laid off any administrators yet?
At a recent zoning hearing at an elementary school cafeteria, the fire marshal arrived and told the crowd there were too many people in the cafeteria. I wonder who called the fire marshal. I wonder how they feel about all those students eating in that same cafeteria every day and if that breaks the fire code?
I’m still fighting cancer, but as you can see, it has only made me meaner.
