Neighboring Lamar Consolidated School District has Bowie Elementary school in Rosenberg and now Fort Bend Independent School District has one by that name, too, only it’s a middle school, the 14th one and its latest addition.
Formerly referred to as Middle School #14, it is now officially James Bowie Middle School. The name was approved by the Fort Bend ISD trustees last week for the new school located on 700 Plantation Drive in Richmond, which will open in August. The school’s principal had previously been named.
Chris Morgan, who is the current principal of Garcia Middle School, will head the new middle school this upcoming school year. Morgan previously served as principal of Walker Station Elementary in 2006, and also participated on the school’s naming committee.
The committee consisted of parents, district staff members, students, and FBISD Board of Trustee Jim Rice, which recommended the defender of the Alamo, James Bowie’s name for approval.
Texas pioneer James Bowie is known for his prominent role in the Texas Revolution. He joined the Texas militia and in January 1836, he arrived at the Alamo, where he commanded volunteer forces. The Texas hero is known for his demonstrated leadership and perseverance during his lifetime, and as one of the 188 defenders of the Alamo who fought for Texas independence.
James Bowie Middle School was included in last week’s FBISD rezoning action effective the upcoming school year. Some geographic areas formerly zoned to Garcia and Crockett middle schools are now zoned to Bowie.
