Bev's Burner
Some's Hot, Some's Not

By B.K. Carter

"Bev Carter is the owner/publisher of the Fort Bend Star, winner of numerous state and national awards. She has been a voice of Fort Bend's largest circulated newspaper for 30 years."

Fun with your computer.....With all this talk about budget shortfalls and the legislature cutting school funding, I’ve been trying to figure out some things. Bearing in mind that Fort Bend ISD is one of the largest districts in the state (I’ve heard it is sixth in Texas in terms of size) I have been wondering how much money the district spends on administrative salaries, not even counting the salaries of administrative positions like principals and assistant principals. The administrative salaries might be interesting.

Knowing that a public information request would just end up making me mad because even though this is information readily available at the school district by simply pressing a few buttons on a computer somewhere, I would be told to wait for 10 days.

So I got to noodling around on the internet and I’ll be darn if I didn’t find a place that has all the salaries of officials all over the state of Texas, even Dr. Jenney’s administrative assistant ($97,708) who came with him from Virginia Beach.

This wonderful site? The Texas Tribune. You can also sort the salaries by department or title. So if you go to the Texas Tribune web site and simply put in Fort Bend ISD salaries, like this:

I checked out all the highest paid salaries at FBISD then I sorted by administration building, like this:

The reason I used the administration building is that I thought if we have to cut salaries and positions, what better place to start rather than essential personnel, like teachers and lunch ladies.

I urge you to do this. You will be shocked at the number of positions that we fund. Don’t forget to take a look at the salaries for those who work in the administration building annex. There’s another two pages of them.

I thought I’d never get tired.....Early this year, Chick-fil-A had a big, fancy party to introduce their new spicy chicken biscuit. The party was at the Houstonian on Post Oak, and I told their local PR person I didn’t like to leave Fort Bend County.

She promised me I should not miss this because as an added bonus, attendees would receive a goodie bag containing a VIP card to Chick-fil-A which was good for one year and entitling one to a Chick-fil-A meal or item every day.

Well, I got to thinking about this fancy party for a biscuit and how much a year of Chick-fil-A meals is worth (6 days a week for 52 weeks at approximately $7 per meal with drink equals about $2,000.

I love free food. It’s one of the reasons I got into the newspaper business in the first place.

I talked my daughter-in-law Lisa Fredrickson, who publishes "Fort Bend Focus" and "Focus on Women", to accompany me--actually drive me. The promise of a Chick-fil-A card and the chance to meet some potential advertisers brought Lisa out and we hied out to Houston. We were both on a diet and didn’t enjoy all the great food but we made our appearances and were awarded with VIP cards.

I felt special until as a promotion for opening the new drive through Chick-fil-A location on the freeway by Wal-Mart, the company offered a VIP card to the first 100 people to come. I guess other people realized the potential value of the card because on the coldest night of the year, a tent city sprung up at that location.

However, the other 100 VIP cards have been a good thing because when I drive through Chick-fil-A, the employees readily know what the card is. But here it is in mid-February and I’m already tired of Chick-fil-A, something I thought would never happen.

Oh, I’m sure I’ll still drive by and pick up an order at least once a week, but I have already tried about everything on the menu. Check back with me in about 6 months and see if I’ve gained about 10 pounds or if I’ve developed a habit of throwing the mattress on the floor and trying to roost on the bed slats.
