Methodist Sugar Land Hospital seeks
community blessings for expansion

Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is seeking written blessings, prayers and well-wishes from Fort Bend community members in preparation for the opening of its latest expansion this fall.

“As our hospital expands, we are reminded of our promise to cultivate a safe, spiritual and healing environment for the Fort Bend community,” said Bill Bross, director of Spiritual Care and Values Integration at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “To help us fulfill that promise, we are asking the community to submit their blessings for our patients, family, staff, physicians and/or our community.”

These blessings will be displayed throughout the hospital, including patient rooms, hallways and pavers. To participate, please visit www.methodistsugarland.com or mail submissions to Methodist Sugar Land Hospital at 16655 Southwest Freeway, Sugar Land, TX 77479; attention Bill Bross.

“We literally want our hospital to be surrounded by the blessings, well-wishes and prayers of our diverse community. The Methodist Hospital System honors religious diversity, and we look forward to receiving messages from community members of all walks of faith,” Bross said.

Currently offering 54 beds to the citizens of Fort Bend County, the new $296 million expansion will initially house 180 beds, with the capacity to grow quickly to 256 beds. The expansion includes three cardiac catheterization labs, additional labor and delivery suites and enhanced existing services in critical care, emergency department, surgery and imaging. In addition, five centers of excellence are expanding, including heart, cancer, orthopedics, neurosciences and urology.

OakBend in top 15% of hospitals in U.S. for respiratory care

OakBend medical Center has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) under a national program aimed at helping patients and families make informed decisions about the quality of the respiratory care services available in hospitals.

About 15% of hospitals in the United States have received this award. This is the fourth time that OakBend has received this recognition.

The QRCR program was started by the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) in 2003 to help consumers identify those facilities using qualified respiratory therapists to provide respiratory care. Hospitals earning the QRCR designation ensure patient safety by agreeing to adhere to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services.

To quality for the recognition OakBend provided documentation showing it meets the following conditions:

• All respiratory therapists employed by the hospital to deliver bedside respiratory care services are either legally recognized by the state as competent to provide respiratory care services or hold the CRT or RRT credential.

• Respiratory therapists are available 24 hours.

• Other personnel qualified to perform specific respiratory procedures and the amount of supervision required for personnel to carry out specific procedures must be designated in writing.

• A doctor of medicine or osteopathy is designated as medical director of respiratory care services.

Respiratory therapists are specially trained health care professionals who work under physicians’ orders to provide a wide range of breathing treatments and other services to people with asthma, chronic obstruction pulmonary disease, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer, AIDS, and other lung or lung-related conditions. They also care for premature infants and are key members of lifesaving response teams charged with handling medical emergencies.
