A cleaner Four Corners community becomes a reality

Over 200 volunteers from the First Colony Church of Christ teamed up with residents of the Four Corners community to clean up years of accumulated trash in their neighborhood. Joined by Sprint Waste Services, who provided the dumpsters and additional volunteers, Second Mile Ministry, who provided water bottles for the volunteers, and Lupe Tortillas, who served a fajita lunch for the 225 workers, the day was a complete success.

Steve Harris, who served as the project coordinator said, “We couldn’t have done it without the monumental support from these generous partners.”

“It all began last year when we challenged our church members to serve others in the community,” explains Joshua Diggs, one of the ministers at the First Colony Church of Christ. “We discovered there was a trash and environmental problem that needed to be addressed in the Four Corners community.”

Wanting to help, but unsure where to begin, it was resident Maria Vela who took the initiative and set a seven foot pile of trash outside her trailer next to the road, ready to be picked up. With the help of resident and retired Sugar Land policeman Rufus Green, word spread throughout the south side of Four Corners to set out trash which was picked up and hauled out last year, in March of 2007. Last Saturday, volunteers returned for phase two to help clean up the north side.

This year, volunteers filled 30 twenty-foot dumpsters, collected around 1,500 used tires and over 400 gallons of old paint. “There have been a lot of un-kept promises of help made to this neighborhood over the years,” said Steve Harris. “So it was important that we finish what we started last year.”

After both clean-up projects, Four Corner residents and volunteers filled a total of 73 twenty-foot dumpsters of trash, 2,500 used tires and over 900 gallons of old paint. Friendships between residents and volunteers have been formed while a cleaner, healthier environment has been provided for residents of the Four Corners community.
