It becomes clear that Jake’s terrifying stories are true, and a mysterious Japanese woman may be the only hope of banishing the spirits forever...unless her plan destroys them all.

Watching this 1945 made movie in 2002 gave me warm fuzzies all over. This was when Hollywood was careful not to offend folks with abusive words and over the top plots. `It’s a Pleasure’ was a pleasure to watch. It is funny, entertaining, a little suspenseful and had some drama. The scenery and costumes were beautiful. This Miss Susie Sunshine of a movie creates a wonderful fantasy world that I think we need more of these days. The coloring and quality of this movie made it hard to believe it was made in 1945. `It’s a Pleasure’ is a nice, romantic, pleasurable escape.

Roxanne (Darryl Hannah) is a beautiful astronomer in search of a comet, and Chris is a hunky but inarticulate fire expert who has been hired to train C.D.’s team of well-meaning firemen. C.D. immediately falls in love with Roxanne but he is sure that she won’t notice anything about him except his extremely prominent facial feature and is quick to hide his passionate desires. However, Roxanne has captured the fancy of another, Chris. When C.D. learns of Chris’s crush, he uses his gift for poetry to help the inexperienced courtier capture her affections. Wooed by the beauty of the words, Roxanne falls for Chris, not realizing that C.D. was the one really doing the talking. Of course, when put to the test, Chris does not live up to Roxanne’s expectations and she quickly learns the identity of her real poetic suitor.

With an arresting mix of eroticism and horror, Oshima plunges the viewer into a nightmarish tale of guilt and retribution in Empire of Passion (Ai no borei). Set in a Japanese village at the end of the nineteenth century, the film details the emotional and physical downfall of a married woman and her younger lover following their decision to murder her husband and dump his body in a well. Empire of Passion was Oshima’s only true kaidan (Japanese ghost story), and the film, a savage, unrelenting experience, earned him the best director award at the Cannes Film Festival.

They say you can never go home again...because you never know when the ghosts of murders past are waiting to shatter the present. Such is the case in The Uninvited, an eerie and not-so-family-friendly entry in Hollywood’s ongoing fascination with remaking Asian horror films. Based on the South Korean chiller A Tale of Two Sisters, the film first introduces us to troubled teen Anna (Emily Browning) as she prepares to be released from a psychiatric institution. Having witnessed the accidental death of her ailing mother, and having been saved from a subsequent suicide attempt, Anna knows that the road to recovery will be long and bumpy. Making the path more treacherous is the presence of Rachel (Elizabeth Banks), the mother’s nursemaid who has now become Anna’s father’s soon-to-be wife. Already bound by their resentment of her, Anna and older sister, Alex (Arielle Kebbel), come to suspect Rachel of foul play when Anna is visited by the ghost of their dead mother.

For years, it’s been tradition that Aaron Tyler (Johnathon Schaech) has his buddies over for a weekly poker game. This Monday, however, is a little unusual. After discovering a burglar in the kitchen, Aaron and his friends accidentally kill the intruder and, rather than breach their one true refuge from the real world, decide to dispose of the body without involving the authorities. But the burglar may not have been alone, and the witness seems to be exacting a grisly revenge.
