Sugar Land Rotary President Charlie Myer passes the gavel
Marshall Whichard named S.L. Rotarian of the Year

Charlie Myer, Sugar Land Rotary President for 2007-08 Rotary Year, presented the Rotary Gavel to Scott Finley, incoming president at a recent installation ceremony held at Sweetwater Country Club. During Myer’s tenure as president, the Sugar Land Rotary Club accomplished several milestones in community and club service. The 2007 Shrimpfest was one of the biggest in club history, with almost $200,000 raised for community projects. Shortly after the Shrimpfest, the Club put on one of the Houston area’s largest Veterans tribute with the 2007 Legacy of Freedom program.

In the recent end of year convention for Rotary District 5890, held in Galveston, Texas District Governor Jeff Tallas named Sugar Land Rotary Club President Charlie Myer, the Large Club President of the Year. Rotary District 5890 is made up of 59 Rotary Clubs in and around the Greater Houston and Texas Gulf Coast area. “Charlie Myer is a true leader. He’s organized, focused and leads through motivation and example. Charlie took the very successful Sugar Land Rotary Club to a new level of success,” Tallas said. Myer is the Community Advancement Director of the YMCAs of Fort Bend County.

At the Installation Dinner, Myer named Marshall Whichard as the 2007-08 Rotarian of the Year. “Marshall truly exemplified this year’s theme of P.R.I.D.E. (Participating Rotarians Involved Do Excel)”, stated Myer. Whichard, who is a past President of the Club and member of the Sugar Land Rotary Hall of Fame, has also been active in leadership roles at the Rotary District level as well. For his efforts this last year, Whichard was awarded a glass engraved clock by President Myer.

In a presentation at a Sugar Land Rotary Club’s weekly meeting in June, District Governor Jeff Tallas, presented the Club with Rotary International’s Club Presidential Citation. The citation is awarded to Clubs worldwide that have met and exceeded the goals and criteria that the International Rotary President, Wilford Wilkinson of Canada, has set to be designated for the distinction.
