Fort Bend ISD Sartartia Middle School Art Department has raised over $10,000.00 in the past 7 years with the sale of art and functional folk art. Mrs. Brenda Tomasello and Ms. Erica Hischke (art teachers at SMS) hunt for items, such as chairs and bookcases that have the potential of being reworked by the student artist. With sanding and design complete, the students turn a cast away piece of furniture into a treasure. In addition to the reworking talents, the students create whimsical toys- constructed from mostly recycled items .
The art show held annually at Sugar Land Town Center features folk art furniture, student paintings, whimsical toys, and face painting. Proceeds from this year event ($1,200) were donated to “Impact a Hero” charity. Jim Holeker from Impact a Hero was present to accept the donation. This organization is devoted to the needs of our military veterans that are returning home wounded and disabled. The organization provides the support to assist soldiers facing physical realities that will be with them for the rest of their lives, like veteran Mr. Dillon Cannon (brother of Sartartia Middle School Student – Kelsey Cannon).
Mrs. Tomasello had this to say about what the donation can do, “Impact a Hero is a huge blessing to families whose loved ones return unable to continue their life as they once did. The organization provides extra funds needed to equip homes for disabled vets, assists in the psychological challenges and provides transportation for families to be reunited while in recovery and therapy.”
