Founders Bank – in partnership with the Fort Bend Star and Methodist Sugar Land Hospital – is hosting an on-site blood drive on Friday, March 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
All donors will receive a free T-shirt and event sponsors will provide snacks and drinks.
“I encourage Fort Bend residents to mark their calendars for March 5 and make plans to ‘give the gift of life,’” says Jim Sturgeon, Founders Bank CEO. “This is a convenient way for people to donate blood – especially businesspeople in Sugar Land. Just take a quick break and come by ... it only takes a few minutes and your donation is vital to ensuring the health and well-being of our community.”
Studies show that fewer than 5 percent of healthy Americans actually donate blood each year, even though a single unit can save as many as three lives (once collected, blood donations are actually separated into three components – red cells, platelets and plasma – each with specific uses). In addition to surgical and trauma-related uses, blood components benefit patients being treated for cancer, babies that are born prematurely, individuals with anemia and more.
The Methodist Hospital, for example, uses as many as 8,000 units of blood components per month.
“People often respond to calls for donations when there is a special emergency, but the reality is that hospitals need blood components every single day,” Sturgeon said. “We can all do our part by donating on March 5.”
The donation process takes about 45 minutes and is open to anyone who is 17 years of age or older and who weighs more than 110 pounds. To reserve a specific donation time, call 281-325-5048 or send an e-mail to Kelly.Schroeder@foundersbanktx.com.
Founders Bank is located at 4690 Sweetwater at Lexington in Sugar Land.
